It’s our birthday, so come celebrate with us this August

Nicholas Building Open Studios and Arcade's 3rd Birthday Party!

Come check out the artisans of the Nicholas Building as 50-odd makers across nine floors in this decrepit historic building leave their doors ajar for two nights of artistic stalking.

You'll find us in the Vali Myers Studio in room 2 on level 7 along with secret squirrels Hidden Secrets Tours, architect Angela Nicholas (yes this is her lineage!) and the multifarious Supple Fox (amazing what a pair of cats can do with a ball of string).

On friday night we're celebrating three years of telling tales by saddling up all the Arcade horses and hoping for cakes that look like this. Or not. Bargain books guaranteed.

When: 5-9pm Thursday 19 and Friday 20 August
Where: The Nicholas Building, 37 Swanston St, Melbourne

Melbourne, she gets better with age

Of course Melbourne is much older than the 175 she claims to be, just ask Jenny Lee or read about it in her book Making Modern Melbourne.

But August is surely the most Melbourne of months, so a birthday in August is the perfect way to honour the old girl. To celebrate, we’re launching our newest history of the city: Seamus O'Hanlon's Melbourne Remade, which charts Melbourne's radical transformation since the 1970s, from industrial wasteland to cultural heartland.

Seamus will host four exclusive book-based walking tours during the Melbourne Writers Festival – and conveniently, there’s one right before the launch! Join him for a stroll along the Yarra from Docklands to Fed Square and then for coffee, in thoroughly Melbourne style.

Oslo hits the airwaves

But wait, there's more! Now's your chance to overhear Oslo Davis talk about how he synthesised a city – a country! – on 774ABC Melbourne radio, in conversation with local legend Jon Faine.

When: 11am-12pm Monday 16 August
Where: 774 ABC Radio Melbourne and ABC local radio across Victoria

Oslo Davis goes out of sight (but not out of mind) as he hit the airwaves with ABC Sydney's James Valentine (former Model). Seems Sydneysiders love to eavesdrop just as much as their Melbourne friends (or foes)!

OVERHEARD

Oslo Davis

Have you ever overheard a hilarious comment while making your way from here to there? Oslo Davis has made a career of it, becoming the ears and eyes of the city and recording his observations for us all to enjoy (or cringe over).

Now Oslo’s mini-masterpieces can be viewed all in one place, promising hours if not years of voyeuristic delight from the comfort of an armchair, train seat or park bench. Gain new insight on the human condition and the joys and dilemmas of life in the modern age.

August launch

MELBOURNE REMADE
The Inner City Since the 70s

Seamus O'Hanlon

Come on a journey beyond the city’s beloved laneways and read the palimpsest that is Melbourne.

Taking up where Making Modern Melbourne left off, Melbourne Remade charts the social and cultural consequences of globalisation, the rise and rise of postmodern monoliths, and the recent resurgence of the CBD as a place to live, work and play.

October launch

MacRobertsonland

Jill Robertson

Welcome to MacRobertson’s Great White City, a land of candy delight!

Macroberstonland tells the amazing rags to riches tale of Australia’s very own Willy Wonka, MacPherson Robertson. Mostly lost to history, the man behind some of Australia’s (and the world’s) favourite confectionery – including Freddo Frog, Cherry Ripe and Old Gold chocolate – was an eccentric self-made millionaire and generous philanthropist whose spirit reflected all the hopes and dreams of a young nation.

Jill Roberston (no relation!) shares the wonderful story of this remarkable character with warmth and wit, with just a little gossip thrown in for good measure.
