Wowsers! November already
- where did the year go?
We can't account for the first half but we can account for the second. Here's just a taste of what we've been up to, and what you've been a part of.
In May we took to Clunes Booktown for two days of mulled wine, Dutch ginger cake and secondhand book hunting. Later that month we found ourselves in New York City for Book Expo America, where we showed the Yankees what we Aussies can do, gained some valuable insight into the rapidly changing publishing industry and discovered a new trend for books about monkeys.
Several margheritas later and a train trip through middle America and we were back in Australia to launch serial eavesdropper Oslo Davis's Overheard in July. Flipping through his book for about the 1000th time just now and we're still laughing out loud. Marvel at his line drawings and watercolours, giggle at his hilarious insights into the human condition, buy his book!
At the Melbourne Writers Festival in August we launched Seamus O'Hanlon's Melbourne Remade, which delves deep into the city's very recent history and reveals the creation of the Melbourne we know and love. This is a book for those who love Melbourne, its laneways and its super-developments; for those who want to hear the city's heart beat.
In September we helped our old friend Lisa Lang launch her Vogel-winning novel Utopian Man. A piano played itself before a concert pianist stole the show, there were bananas and there were secret champagnes in the City Library. The spirit of EW Cole lives on.
Choctober saw the launch of Jill Robertson's MacRobertsonland - the rags to riches tale of Australia's very own Willy Wonka. As usual the Arcade punters dressed the part - this time in candy colours and factory attire - and enjoyed several sparklings, grapefruit parfaits and a modern take on Cherry Ripe. There's something in this book for everyone - from bicycle weddings, Melbourne's handsomest historical figure and the creation of the entire Australian confectionery supply chain.
This month we've got a special offer for early Christmas shoppers: buy three Arcade books and a get a copy of Madeleine Hamilton's hot little number Our Girls: Aussie Pin-ups of the 40s and 50s absolutely free. Just visit the website and we'll have it delivered to your door!
Finally, December means the annual Arcade Parade! This year you're all invited to Level 2 of the Nicholas Building for a two day artisans' market. We'll be there along with Nicholas Building haberdashery l'uccello, recycler boutique Harold and Maude, Japanese textiler Kimono House, milliner Serena Lindeman and jeweller Vikki Kassioras. Come by 6-8pm Friday 3 December for a drink, a little storytelling and some serious Arcade specials.
